Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Bleed Headline" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a black magazine spread from the 1990s music press. A giant headline bleeds off the page, one hot red line tells the story, and a pull quote, folios and issue numbers make it feel like a real printed page.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #111111 (near black).
- Headline and main text: #F2EDE4 (off-white).
- The data line, the peak dot, the kicker, the pull quote rule and the attribution: #FF2B1C (hot red).
- Secondary text: #8A857D. Gridlines and footer rule: #3A3835. A subtle highlight band (e.g. top 10): #1C1B1A.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Anton for the headline: the key number or word ("NO.3") at 372px, -4px letter-spacing, positioned at x -28 and baseline y 242 so it is cropped by the top and left edges but still reads. Anton 14px for the folio page numbers.
- Courier Prime for everything else: kicker 11px 700 uppercase with 2.5px letter-spacing in red; deck 21px 700 in off-white across three lines stating the finding; subtitle 14px gray; axis numbers 12px; month labels 10px with 1.5px letter-spacing; point labels 11px 700 uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing; pull quote 16px italic, 23px line height; attribution 10px 700 uppercase with 2.5px letter-spacing; footer 10px.

Layout:
- Headline top left, bleeding. Deck column starting at x 612 beside it: kicker at y 64, deck lines at y 110, 136 and 162, subtitle at y 196 and 214.
- The chart occupies the lower half: plot x 84 to 720, y 332 to 540.
- A narrow pull quote column at x 764 (about 160px wide, 17 to 18 characters per line) beside the peak, with a 2px red rule at x 748 from y 300 to 468.
- Footer: a 0.8px #3A3835 rule at y 572, left and right page folios (58 and 59) in Anton, the publication name and issue number in the corners, the source centered.

Axes and grid:
- Gridlines 0.8px #3A3835 at labeled ticks only. For a rank measure invert the scale so No. 1 is at the top and say so in the subtitle.
- Axis numbers on the left in gray, right-aligned 10px from the plot. Month ticks 0.8px gray, 6px long, labels just right of each tick.

Marks:
- Line chart: one 3.5px #FF2B1C line with straight segments and round joins. The first point is a hollow r 4 circle (2px red stroke, page fill) with a label; the peak is a solid r 6 red dot with an off-white label 16px above it.
- Bar chart: slender square-cornered bars in #FF2B1C for the focus series and #3A3835 for the rest, about 50% of the band, with an off-white value label only on the focus bar; the same headline, deck, pull quote and folios.

Avoid: more than one accent color, a legend, gradients, glows, rounded corners, and letting the headline crop so hard that it no longer reads.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the headline bleeds off the top and left edges but reads at thumbnail size, the pull quote column does not touch the line, and the deck's numbers match the data.
