Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Black Paper" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a black sketchbook page drawn on with metallic gel pens. Crafty and personal, but neat enough to pin on a studio wall: handwritten labels, a ruled box, a little translucent tape.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #16161A with two subtle white noise layers: long horizontal fibers (fractal noise, base frequency 0.012 x 0.9, about 9% alpha) and fine grain (0.85, about 7% alpha).
- Gel pens, in series order: silver #C9CDD6, gold #D8B25A, rose copper #D98A70, pearl white #EDE6DA.
- Each pen has a highlight and a shadow tone for its shimmer: silver #F4F6FA / #8D929C, gold #F6DE98 / #9E7A2E, copper #F4BCA6 / #9C5842, pearl #FFFFFF / #B9B0A2.
- Title #EDE6DA. Labels and axis numbers #8E8C93. Pencil guides #3A3940. Ruled box #6E6C74. Tape #B8B8BE at 22% opacity.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Kalam for all handwriting: title 700 40px, subtitle 300 19px, series labels 700 20px in the pen color, the margin date 400 20px.
- Figtree for small numbers: axis numbers 12px, month initials 12px 500, the value under each series label 12px, source 12px.

Layout:
- Title and subtitle top left at x 84; a handwritten date in the top margin right-aligned with the box.
- The plot sits inside a hand-ruled box (x 84 to 780, y 150 to 520): four separate 1.4px strokes with rounded caps, each a gentle quadratic wobble of 1 to 3px and overshooting the corners by about 6px.
- Translucent tape strips (68 x 22) across all four box corners, rotated roughly 35 to 40 degrees alternately.
- Series labels sit outside the box on the right, each joined to its line end by a thin 1px curved lead line, with the latest value in Figtree underneath.

Axes and grid:
- Dotted pencil guides (0.8px, 1 on 5 off, round caps) at round values, a solid 1.2px baseline, axis numbers right-aligned left of the plot, single-letter month initials under the baseline inside the box.

Marks:
- Line chart: smooth monotone curves, 2.8px, round caps, jittered by 1 to 2px at each point so they look hand-drawn. Stroke each with a user-space linear gradient that alternates base, highlight, base, shadow tones along the x axis (9 stops) for a metallic shimmer. Under each line a 5px blurred (2.2px) glow of the base color at 18% opacity; on top a 0.7px highlight-tone line offset 0.8px up at 55% opacity. A 3.6px dot at the last point.
- Bar chart: bars drawn as gel-pen outlines (2.4px, shimmer gradient stroke, round joins) with a sparse 45-degree hatching of the same pen at 35% opacity inside, bar corners slightly wobbled. Values handwritten above each bar in the pen color.

Avoid: pure white, flat vector perfection, filled areas, boxed legends, and saturated non-metallic colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the shimmer is visible but subtle, series labels do not collide at the right edge, the tape does not cover any data or numbers, and silver and pearl stay distinguishable through their direct labels.
