Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Birch Ply" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a laser-cut birch plywood display at a race expo or a design studio. Every mark is a piece cut from plywood, with its laminated edge showing, a thin burned kerf line and laser-etched type in warm brown. Crafted, warm and exact.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Board: #EFE4CF (pale birch) for the whole canvas.
- Plywood face for every mark and the title tag: #DDBF8A.
- Laminated edge veneers: #F5EAD2 (cream) and #C08A43 (honey).
- Laser-etched text and ticks: #5B3A1F. Burned kerf outlines: #4A2C14. Secondary text: #8A6A48.
- Shadows: #3A2410.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Work Sans throughout, etched in #5B3A1F. Title 700, 21px. Subtitle 500, 13.5px, #8A6A48, stating measure, unit, event and count. Value labels 700, 13px. Axis labels 500, 12 to 13px. Axis titles 600, 11px, uppercase, 2.2px letter-spacing, #8A6A48. Source 500, 12px.

Layout:
- The title and subtitle sit on a plywood tag at the top left (x 44, y 30, 700 x 88, 10px corner radius) filled with the ply face, its laminated edge showing as a 5px strip below it, a 1.1px kerf outline, a 7px punched hole at the left (board color with a kerf ring), and a soft shadow. Text starts 50px from the tag's left edge.
- Plot about x 104 to 888, y 190 to 492. Source bottom right at y 584.

Axes and grid:
- Etched horizontal guides: 0.8px #5B3A1F at 28% opacity, dotted 1 on 3 off, with labels placed 12px left of the plot, right-aligned, in #8A6A48. A small uppercase axis title ("RUNNERS") above the labels.
- A 1.4px etched baseline, ticks every bin (5px) and taller ticks (9px) at labeled values, labels 26px below, and a centered uppercase axis title 50px below.

Marks:
- Bar chart: adjacent plywood bars (histogram style) with only a 3px gap. Each bar: ply face fill, a 10px laminated edge along the top made of 1.4px honey stripes at 1.6, 4.6 and 7.6px on cream, a 1.1px kerf outline around the whole bar, and a soft drop shadow (dx 3, dy 3, blur 2.5, #3A2410 at 22%). Value labels 8px above each bar. For ordinary bar charts use the same bars at 60% of the band width.
- Line chart: draw the line as a 6px plywood strip (ply face with a 1.1px kerf outline on both sides and the laminated stripes visible at each end), with 9px plywood discs at the points, each with a kerf outline and a small etched value label. An area under the line can be a flat ply-face shape with the laminated edge along its top.
- Annotate the key range with an etched bracket (1.2px, 8px legs) and a 13px bold label, computing the share from the data.

Texture:
- Birch grain: fractal noise stretched horizontally (base frequency 0.0025 x 0.42, 4 octaves) mapped to a honey brown (RGB about 0.55, 0.38, 0.18) at 30% over the board, and again at 18% over the bars so they share the grain.

Avoid: saturated color, gradients on the bars, rounded bar corners, gaps wider than a kerf between histogram bars, glossy effects and a legend for a single series.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the title fits on the tag, the laminated stripes show on even the shortest bar, the kerf lines stay crisp, and the bracket share is arithmetically right.
