Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Biomass Reference

LightLine

Stock assessment figure with a navy estimate, ribbon and dashed reference points.

  • Navy#1F3A5F
  • Ribbon#C9DAEC
  • Limit red#B83A2E
  • Precautionary amber#C98A12
  • Page#FFFFFF

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Biomass Reference" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a figure from a fisheries stock assessment report. Sober, scientific and exact: a white page, one navy estimate inside its uncertainty ribbon, and dashed management reference points that tell the reader at a glance whether the stock is safe.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF.
- Main series: #1F3A5F (navy). Its confidence ribbon: #C9DAEC at 75% opacity.
- Limit reference line and anything "below the limit": #B83A2E (red). Precautionary reference line: #C98A12 (amber).
- Title ink #1A2230, secondary text #5B6675, gridlines #E6EAF0, baseline and ticks #9AA5B4.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Gelasio 700 for the title (29px, #1A2230, sentence case, stating the finding) and for the latest-value callout (20px navy).
- Schibsted Grotesk for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing in navy ("FIGURE 4.2 | STOCK NAME"); subtitle 15px #5B6675 with measure, unit, period and interval; axis labels 13px; reference labels 13px (code and value 700, description 500); legend 13px; source 11.5px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at 88, subtitle at 116. Plot from x 96 to 880, top 164 to baseline 486. Legend row at y 536 starting at the plot's left edge, a hairline rule at 560 and the source line below it.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 1px #E6EAF0 gridlines every 20 units, labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot in 13px #5B6675, the unit ("kt") as a small 600 label above the top tick.
- A 1px #9AA5B4 zero baseline with 5px ticks every 5 years and year labels 24px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: the estimate as a 3px navy monotone-smoothed line with round joins, over its interval ribbon (upper and lower bounds smoothed the same way, no outline). End the line with a 5px navy dot with a 2px white ring, and label the latest value above-left in Gelasio 20px with a 12px "SSB 2025" caption.
- Reference points: full-width 1.8px dashed lines (7 on, 5 off), limit in red, precautionary in amber. Label each at the left end, hung 18px below its line where the series does not run: "Blim 40 kt" bold plus "limit reference" medium, in the line's color. No knockout boxes.
- Years below the limit: a 7px red strip at 32% opacity sitting on the baseline under those years, a faint 4.5% red wash over the same columns for the full plot height, and a 12px 600 red label "Below Blim 2003–2008" centered just above the strip.
- Bar chart: navy bars (about 60% of the band, square corners) with the interval as a thin 1.5px #C9DAEC-to-navy whisker on each bar; the same dashed reference lines and left-hung labels; bars below the limit filled red instead of navy, plus the red baseline strip.

Avoid: markers on every point, heavy axis lines, filled areas under the line other than the ribbon, a boxed legend, and more than the two reference colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the reference labels sit clear of the ribbon and line, the red strip covers exactly the years below the limit, the stated count of such years is right, and the latest-value label does not touch the ribbon edge.
