Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Barrel Room" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a dim rickhouse lit by one lamp. Dark oak, gridlines drawn as barrel staves, and a single warm amber line that glows faintly against a pale benchmark.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Ground: #1A120C (dark oak brown-black).
- Staves behind the plot: alternating #21170F and #1C130D, each shaded toward its edges with black at 28% opacity (0% in the middle), separated by 2px #0F0A06 seams with a 0.6px #3A2A1C highlight 1.5px to their right. A soft radial lamp glow of #E0A34A at 7% opacity over the canvas center.
- Main series: #E0A34A (amber). Benchmark: #CFC0A6 (pale), dashed.
- Title and italic annotations: #F1D3A2 (title cream). Labels, axis numbers and subtitle: #B08E68. Horizontal guides: #3A2A1C.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Libre Bodoni: title 500 at 34px in #F1D3A2, stating the finding with both end values; end value callout 500 at 24px amber; annotations italic 400 at 15px.
- Figtree: eyebrow 600 at 12px, 3px letter-spacing, amber, uppercase; subtitle 400 at 16px; axis numbers 500 at 13px; axis title 600 at 11px with 2.4px letter-spacing, uppercase; series tag 700 at 10px with 1.6px letter-spacing; source 12px.

Layout:
- 64px left margin. Eyebrow at y 62, title at y 108, subtitle at y 138. Plot from x 92 to 880, y 188 to 486, with the staves extending 18px above the top guide. Source at bottom left.

Axes and grid:
- Vertical gridlines are the stave seams: one stave per x category (per year), so the grid reads as wood, not lines.
- Horizontal guides 1px #3A2A1C dotted (1 on, 4 off) at round values, labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot, with a % suffix. A 1px #B08E68 baseline.

Marks:
- Line chart: the main series is a 2.6px amber line with straight segments, a soft glow under it (the same path 5px wide at 35% opacity with a 3.5px Gaussian blur, filter region the full canvas), an area fill from amber at 22% opacity to 0% at the baseline, and 3.6px dot markers in amber with a 1.5px ground-colored ring; the last point is r 5.5. The benchmark is a 1.8px #CFC0A6 line dashed 6 on 5 off at 85% opacity, with no markers, labeled at its end in Figtree 13px.
- Bar chart: each bar sits inside its own stave, filled amber with the same soft glow behind it and a 1px #F1D3A2 top edge; a benchmark shown as a dashed #CFC0A6 tick across each bar. Values in Libre Bodoni above bars.

Labels and annotation:
- The final value as a large amber Libre Bodoni number with a small uppercase series tag under it, right-aligned just left of the last point.
- Up to two short italic notes (two lines each) above the points they explain, joined by 0.8px #CFC0A6 leaders.

Avoid: cool colors, bright white, heavy borders, legends (label directly), glows that clip at the plot edges, and more than two annotations.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the staves stay subtle behind the data, the benchmark label doesn't touch the dashed line, the title's numbers match the plotted end values, and the glow isn't clipped.
