Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Band Gaps" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an optoelectronics figure on a near-black page, where each bar glows in the color of light its value corresponds to. Wide, spaced uppercase headline; clean grotesque labels; a thin spectrum strip under the axis.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #0F0F12. Text: #EDEDF2. Secondary text: #8A8A96. Gridlines: #23232A.
- Bar colors follow the visible spectrum by value: #8A5CF5 (violet), #3F7BFF (blue), #22C7B8 (cyan), #5DD45A (green), #F2D22E (yellow), #FF8A2A (orange), #E8403A (red). Values outside the visible range use #8C2A3C (dark maroon) with a 1px #B04A5C outline so they still read on black.
- Spectrum strip: a horizontal gradient through the same colors at their energies, fading to #1A0D10 at the low end and #1E1433 at the high end.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Syncopate 700 23px uppercase with 1px letter-spacing for the title, stating the finding.
- Barlow for everything else: subtitle 14.5px #8A8A96 with measure and unit; category labels 500 15px right-aligned; end values 700 15px with a 12px #8A8A96 secondary unit (for example "eV · 403 nm"); region labels 600 11px uppercase with 1.6px letter-spacing; ticks 12.5px.

Layout:
- Title at x 40, y 64; subtitle at y 96. Category labels right-aligned at x 200; bars from x 214; value axis to x 858.
- 33px per row with 19px bars, sorted from highest to lowest value.
- Region labels ("INFRARED", "VISIBLE", "UV"; no arrow glyphs, which the font lacks) above the plot, with 1px dashed (2 on, 4 off) guide lines at the region boundaries at 45% opacity.
- An 8px spectrum strip directly under the last bar, then ticks and tick labels below it. "Source: illustrative data" 12px bottom left, a definition note bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- No axis line; the spectrum strip serves as the axis. Vertical gridlines 1px #23232A at round values; bars start at zero.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal bars with 1.5px corner radius, each filled with the spectrum color its value maps to, and a 2px white cap at the bar end (60% opacity, 35% for out-of-range bars). Value labels 10px past the end.
- Line chart: a 2.5px line whose stroke is the same horizontal spectrum gradient mapped to the value, or colored per segment, with 5px dots filled in the point's spectrum color and the spectrum strip under the x axis; labels at the ends in Barlow.

Avoid: glows and shadows, rainbow colors that do not map to a value, lowercase or narrow titles, light backgrounds, and a legend (the strip explains the colors).

When you're done, render the chart and check that every bar's color matches the strip directly below its end, the region counts in the title are right, and the dark maroon bars stay visible at thumbnail size.
