Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Bale Tonnage" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the operations board of a materials recovery facility. Industrial and practical: every bar is a stack of strapped bales, like the yard itself, on pale kraft paper.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #EFE6D6 (pale kraft), with an 8px #2E2721 band across the very top edge.
- Series (sorted streams), in order: #A9763F (cardboard kraft), #5A78A6 (mixed paper blue), #A8524A (can brick red), #93B35E (glass sage). For more series, add muted mid-tones of similar lightness.
- Bale outlines and straps: #3B3025 (outline at 60% opacity, straps at 50%).
- Ink #2E2721. Secondary text #6F6456. Gridlines #DDD1BC. Key bale fill #C9B697.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Oswald 600 for the title (34px, uppercase, 0.4px letter-spacing, #2E2721, stating the finding) and Oswald 500 for category labels (16px uppercase, 1.5px letter-spacing).
- Barlow for everything else: eyebrow 12.5px 600 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing in #6F6456; subtitle 16px 400 #6F6456; axis labels 13px 500; value labels 12px 700 #2E2721; category totals 12px 500 #6F6456; legend 14px 600; key 13px 700 and 11.5px; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px margins. Eyebrow at y 52, title at y 94, subtitle at y 122.
- A key box at the top right (x 656 to 904, y 102 to 146): 1px #6F6456 outline, one sample bale and two lines: "1 bale = 20 tonnes" and "Dashed straps: part bale, cut to size".
- Plot from x 96 to 904, y 180 to 484. A small uppercase unit label ("TONNES", 11px 600, 1.5px letter-spacing) above the y labels.
- Legend row at y 574 at the bottom left (bale-shaped swatches 16 x 14 with two straps), source at the bottom right.

Axes and grid:
- Gridlines at every second bale boundary (every 40 units when a bale is 20), 1px #DDD1BC dashed 3/3. Solid 1.5px #2E2721 baseline.
- Y labels right-aligned 18px left of the plot. Category labels 28px below the baseline, with the category total 18px under each.

Marks:
- Bar chart: grouped vertical bars, 25px wide with 5px between bars in a group. Each bar is built from bales: every full unit (20 tonnes) is a block the full bar width, 1px inset top and bottom so a 2px seam shows between bales, filled with the series color, 0.8px outline, a 2px white highlight at 22% opacity along its top edge, and two vertical strap lines (1px) at 30% and 70% of the width. The remainder sits on top as a part bale cut to its exact height with dashed straps (2 on, 2 off, 35% opacity). The bar total is honest to the axis. Value printed 7px above each stack.
- Line chart: a 3px line per series in the same colors, with a small square bale marker (10 x 8px, outlined, with two straps) at each point, values printed above the last marker; gridlines still fall on bale boundaries.

Avoid: rounded corners, gradients, shadows, bright colors, pictograms other than bales, rounding a value to whole bales.

When you're done, render the chart and check that bales stack exactly from the baseline, part bales match the remainder, the key sits clear of the title, and the value labels do not collide.
