Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Balance Pass" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a game designer's playtest notebook. A cream ruled page with a red margin line, tidy slab-serif headings, muted ink-like series colors and handwritten notes in the margin explaining what changed.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #F8F4EC. Ruled lines: #DCE3EA, 1px, every 28px from y 150. Margin rule: #D9A09A, a 1.2px line at x 690 plus a 0.6px line at x 694, full height.
- Series, in order: #B5534A (red), #3F6E9E (blue), #5E8A55 (green), #A9822B (ochre). Use them in this order; for a single series use #3F6E9E.
- Target or "good" band: #E4DFD4 at 85% opacity.
- Ink for headings: #2E2A24. Secondary text: #6F675B. Pencil (tags, guides, notes): #5A564F. Gridlines: #CFC7B8.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Bitter for all printed text: kicker 11.5px 600 uppercase, 2.2px letter-spacing, #6F675B; title 27px 700 #2E2A24, -0.3px letter-spacing, stating the finding; subtitle 15px 400 #6F675B; axis labels 12.5px; direct series labels 12px 700 in the series color; axis title 12.5px italic.
- Kalam for anything handwritten: margin heading 19px 700 #2E2A24, note titles 14px 700 in the related series color, note body 15.5px 400 #5A564F, a closing note 15px 700.

Layout:
- Kicker at y 50, title at y 90, subtitle at y 118, left margin 48px.
- The chart occupies x 96 to 548, ending far enough left that the end labels finish at least 12px before the red margin rule at x 690; the right margin column (x 716 onward, past the red margin rule) holds the handwritten notes, stacked about 84px apart, each with a numbered pencil circle.
- Source line bottom left in Bitter 11.5px #6F675B.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal gridlines 0.8px #CFC7B8 every 5 units; the neutral or target value (for example 50%) as a 1px #5A564F line dashed 4 on 3 off. No vertical axis line.
- Y labels right-aligned 20px left of the plot, the top one carrying the unit. X labels 22px below the plot; the latest one in 700 ink.
- The acceptable band drawn as a #E4DFD4 rectangle behind everything, labeled "BALANCED 45–55%" in Bitter 10.5px 600 uppercase, 1.6px letter-spacing, right-aligned just above the band.

Marks:
- Line chart: 2.6px straight-segment lines with round joins and caps, a 4px dot (1.5px cream ring) only at the first and last points. First values labeled in the series color beside the first point; end labels "Name 51" to the right of the plot, spread vertically so they never touch, each joined to its line end by an 18px-long 1px leader in the series color, fanned in the same order as the end values so no leaders cross.
- Bar chart: square-cornered bars in the series colors at about 60% of the band (grouped bars 3px apart), sitting on a 1px #5A564F baseline, with the target band behind them and values in Bitter 12px 700 above each bar.
- Change tags: at each moment something changed, a 1px #5A564F dotted vertical guide (2 on 3 off, 70% opacity) topped by a 10px-radius cream circle with a 1.3px pencil stroke and a Kalam 14px 700 number; the same numbered circle introduces the matching note in the margin.

Avoid: a legend box (label lines directly), bright saturated colors, drop shadows, gradients, heavy frames, and handwriting for anything other than notes.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the ruled lines read as faint paper, the handwritten notes stay right of the margin rule, every numbered tag matches a note, end labels do not collide or touch the margin rule, and the title's claim is true for the band.
