Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Award Portfolio" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a page from a university sponsored programs office annual report. Orderly, institutional and trustworthy: a solid slate header band, a finding-first title, crisp square stacks and every total spelled out.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FFFFFF. Header band: #334155 (slate), full width, 58px tall, with white and #CBD5E1 text.
- Series, in stacking order from the baseline up: #1E40AF (deep blue, federal or first series), #0D9488 (teal), #D97706 (amber), #9CA3AF (gray, the smallest or residual category).
- Ink: #0F172A. Secondary text: #64748B. Gridlines and footer rule: #E2E8F0.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Figtree for the header eyebrow (700, 13px, uppercase, 2.2px letter-spacing, white), the fiscal-year chip (700, 15px), the title (700, 27px, #0F172A, stating the finding with a number) and bar totals (700, 15px).
- Source Sans 3 for everything else: subtitle 15px #64748B with measure, unit and a key such as "(n) = number of awards"; legend 14px 600; axis labels 13px #64748B; category labels 14px 600 #0F172A; counts 13px #64748B; source 12px.

Layout:
- Header band: eyebrow left at x 48, a 1px #64748B vertical divider, then the organization and report name in 14px #CBD5E1; on the right a rounded (4px) chip with 12% white fill holding the fiscal year.
- 48px side margins. Title about 50px below the band, subtitle under it, then a legend row of 14px square swatches.
- Chart from y 196 to a baseline at y 510. Footer: 1px #E2E8F0 rule, source line left, a small tracked report code and page number right.

Axes and grid:
- Y axis: no line, labels like "$150M" right-aligned 12px left of the plot; 1px #E2E8F0 gridlines at round steps. Baseline 1.2px #0F172A.
- X axis: category names centered 24px below the baseline, no ticks.

Marks:
- Bar chart: stacked vertical bars about 53% of the slot width (62px at seven categories), square corners, each segment separated by a 1px white stroke. Sort categories by total, largest first. Above each stack print the total in Figtree 15px 700 and, 17px lower, the count in parentheses, e.g. "(412)", in Source Sans 3 13px #64748B.
- Line chart: one 2.5px line per series in the same four colors with square 6px markers, the first series drawn heaviest (3px); totals or counts printed above the final points in the same two-line format; the gray series dashed 4 3.

Avoid: rounded bar tops, gradients, shadows, a y-axis line, legends inside the plot, and colors beyond the four series plus slate.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the totals equal the sum of the segments, the title percentage is computed from the data, header text does not collide, and the smallest stacks still show their counts clearly.
