Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Aurora" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the northern lights over a subarctic forest. Each series is a glowing ribbon of aurora with curtains of light hanging beneath it, above a silhouetted ridge and a spruce treeline. Calm, cold and luminous.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Night sky: a vertical gradient #02050D (top), #071526 (55%), #0C2436 (85%), #113040 (bottom), plus a faint #2BBF8E radial glow (22% at the center, fading out) rising from the horizon.
- Series 1, aurora green: #5CFFB0 ribbon with a #D8FFEC core.
- Series 2, aurora violet: #B77CFF ribbon with a #F0E2FF core.
- Additional series, in order: #5CFFB0, #B77CFF, #7FD4FF (ice blue, #E2F5FF core), #FF8FB8 (rose, #FFE6EF core).
- Text: #EAF6F2 frost for the title, legend and annotation; #8FB3C4 mist for the subtitle, axis labels and source.
- Land: distant ridge #061019, treeline and ground #01040A.

Typography (Google Fonts): Jost only.
- Title 34px 500 with 0.2px letter-spacing. Subtitle 17px 300. Legend 15px 500. Annotation 15px 500. Y labels 14px 400 with a small "hours" (or unit) label 13px 300 above them. Month labels 13px 500 uppercase with 2.5px letter-spacing. Source 11px 400 uppercase with 1.5px letter-spacing at 70% opacity, right-aligned under the legend.

Layout:
- Title and subtitle top left, legend top right (a 30px glowing ribbon swatch per series), source under the legend.
- Plot in the middle of the sky. The bottom 20% of the canvas is land: a jagged ridge line (peaks between y 438 and 486) and in front of it a dense treeline of spruce silhouettes (7 to 13px wide, 22 to 60px tall, three stepped tiers each, bases around y 530), then solid ground. X labels sit on the dark ground in mist.
- About 260 soft stars (0.6 to 1.3px, #EAF6F2), denser near the top and fading toward the horizon.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines. Faint dotted horizontal gridlines (#8FB3C4 at 20%, dashed 1/5 with round caps). The zero line can hide behind the ridge. Y labels right-aligned left of the plot.

Marks:
- Line chart: a smooth (monotone) ribbon for each series, 3.5px (3px for secondary) in the series color with a glow (Gaussian blurs of 9px and 2.5px merged under it), plus a 1.2 to 1.4px pale core on top. Blend all aurora layers with mix-blend-mode screen.
- Curtains: below each ribbon hang vertical rays, 2.5px wide strips placed every 2.5px, each starting at the ribbon and filled with a vertical gradient (pale core color at 90% at the top, the series color at 70 to 75% by 12%, a deeper shade of it at about 23% by 55%, transparent at the bottom: #1FA37A then #0E6B5A for green, #6B3FC4 then #3C2A8A for violet). Vary ray length (up to about 130px) and opacity (14% to 94%) with a sum of three sine waves along x plus a little seeded noise, so the curtain has bright folds and dark gaps. Soften with a 1.4 x 0.8px blur.
- Under each ribbon, a soft band of its color (22 to 26px stroke, blurred 12px, 35% opacity) shifted about 13px down.
- Bar chart: each bar is a curtain: a column of the same vertical rays hanging from a glowing ribbon cap across the bar's top (the bar's height sets where the cap sits; rays fade out toward the baseline rather than filling solid). Keep 30% of the band width between bars.
- Annotate the key point with a thin #EAF6F2 leader at 60% opacity and a label above it.

Avoid: solid area fills, hard edges, neon pink or cyan synthwave colors, grid floors, bright white backgrounds, and more than two dominant aurora colors.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the curtains read as rays rather than filled areas, the ribbons stay the brightest part of each series, the treeline doesn't hide data, and the x labels are readable on the dark ground.
