Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Audit Sampling" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: an external auditor's working paper. Plain white paper, black ledger ink, red-pen tickmarks and initials, a monospaced typewriter feel and the careful bookkeeping of a reviewed file.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Paper: #FFFFFF. A faint binding margin: a 0.8px #B91C1C vertical line at x 28 at 35% opacity.
- Ink for data lines, rules and titles: #111111. Secondary text: #5E5E5E. Light gridlines: #EFEFEF. Dividers and dashed separators: #D4D4D4.
- Tickmark red (every audit mark, the reviewer's initials, footnote letters): #B91C1C.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Merriweather Sans for the title (800, 27px, #111111, stating the finding), the subtitle (400, 14px, #5E5E5E) and the conclusion (700, 12.5px).
- Cousine for everything else: eyebrow 12px 700 uppercase ("CLIENT | FY2025 | AREA"), tick labels 11.5px, legend and footnote text 11.5px, W/P reference 16px 700, initials 15px 700, dates 10px, source 11px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 46, title at y 84, subtitle at y 110.
- Top right: a 1px black-bordered initials block (x 704 to 904, y 28 to 117). Top row: "W/P REF" left and the reference ("C-3.2") right. Below, two cells: "PREPARED" and "REVIEWED", each with initials (preparer in black, reviewer in red) and a date.
- A double rule under the header: 1.5px black at y 136 and 0.6px black at y 139.5.
- Chart on the left (x 96 to 648, y 178 to 486). Right column from x 690: the tickmark legend box, the footnote, then a "CONCLUSION" block.
- Footer rule at y 556 with the source note left and the page reference ("C-3.2 / 1") right.

Axes and grid:
- Light #EFEFEF horizontal gridlines, a 1px black baseline with 5px ticks, labels like "WK 13" in Cousine.
- Period separators as 1px #D4D4D4 dashed (3 on 3 off) verticals with "Q1".."Q4" in 11px 700 above the plot.

Marks:
- Line chart: a thin 1.3px #111111 line with straight segments and no markers. Each sampled item gets a 2.6px red dot on the line and a red check mark (1.9px stroke, round caps, about 11 x 10px) 15px above it. The exception gets a 15px red circle around the point, a circled x (r 8, 1.6px) to its upper right with the footnote letter "a" in 14px 700 red, and its value in 12px 700 red.
- Bar chart: slim black outline bars (1.2px stroke, white fill) or solid #111111 bars at 50% band width; sampled bars carry a red check above, and the exception bar is circled in red with the circled x and footnote letter.
- Totals: a right-aligned "FY total 18,719" in 12.5px 700 with a red dagger after it and a double underline (two 0.8px lines, 3px apart), as a footed total is marked.

Labels and annotation:
- Tickmark legend box: 1px black border, a solid #111111 header strip reading "TICKMARK LEGEND" in white 11.5px 700. Rows with the glyph in red on the left and a two-line explanation: check "Agreed to invoice, PO and receipt", circled x "Exception noted, see note a", dagger "Footed and traced to general ledger".
- Footnote "a" in red followed by a short monospaced note, then a light rule and a CONCLUSION caption with a bold two-line sentence.

Avoid: color fills, gradients, rounded corners, drop shadows, any color other than black, gray and the one red, and a conventional color legend.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every tickmark sits clearly above its point without touching the line, the exception circle is centered on its point, the count of sampled items and exceptions in the title matches the marks, and the right column does not crowd the chart.
