Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Airmail" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: a cream airmail envelope, addressed on a typewriter, franked with a round postmark and a PAR AVION label. Nostalgic and tactile, but still a clean, readable data chart.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Envelope paper: #F3EAD3 (cream) for the whole canvas inside the border.
- Ink and primary data: #1D2F55 (airmail navy) for the title, line, markers, baseline and postmark.
- Airmail red: #B8322F for the border stripes, the eyebrow, and the two accent markers and labels (the peak and the latest value). Never for the main line.
- Airmail blue: #2F5DA8 for the border stripes and the PAR AVION label box.
- Area fill: #C9D8EA (light blue) at 70% opacity under the line.
- Secondary text: #6F6552. Dotted gridlines: #A89D84.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Special Elite (400) for the typed address-style title (30px navy, two lines about 38px apart, stating the finding), the postmark date, and one typed annotation (16px navy).
- Barlow for everything else: eyebrow 12px 600 uppercase with 2.6px letter-spacing in red ("TO THE POSTMASTER, <PLACE>"); subtitle 16px 400 #6F6552 with measure, unit and period; axis labels 14px 500 #6F6552; accent labels 15px 600 red (peak) and 20px 700 red (latest value); footer imprint 11px 600 uppercase with 2px letter-spacing; source 13px.

Layout:
- Airmail border: an 18px frame of diagonal stripes around all four edges. Build it as a 56px pattern rotated 45 degrees: a 14px red stripe, 14px cream, a 14px blue stripe, 14px cream. Fill the canvas with it, then cover everything but the outer 18px with the cream paper.
- Very faint paper grain over the cream: fractal noise (base frequency 0.75, 2 octaves) tinted warm brown at about 7% alpha.
- Eyebrow at x 64, y 66; title lines at y 106 and 144; subtitle at y 176. Plot from x 104 to 880, y 216 to 506.
- PAR AVION label top right: a 156 x 58 px solid blue box with a 1.2px cream inner rule inset 4px, "PAR AVION" in Barlow 20px 700 cream with 2.5px letter-spacing, and "BY AIR MAIL" 11px 500 with 3px letter-spacing below.
- Footer at y 566: "Source: ..." left, a small uppercase imprint right ("<PLACE> POST OFFICE • COUNTER RECORDS").

Axes and grid:
- Dotted gridlines: 1.1px #A89D84, dash 1 on 5 off, round caps. No y-axis line; y labels right-aligned 16px left of the plot.
- A 1.4px navy baseline with 6px navy tick marks at labeled years (every third year) and labels 26px below.

Marks:
- Line chart: a 2.6px navy line with straight segments and round joins, a small navy diamond marker (4.5px half-diagonal, 1.4px cream outline) at every point, and the light blue area fill under it. The peak and latest point get larger red diamonds (7px half-diagonal) with red labels; put a cream knockout rectangle behind a label that would cross a gridline.
- Bar chart: square-cornered navy bars about 60% of the band width with a 1.4px cream outline, sitting on the navy baseline over the same dotted grid; the peak bar and the latest bar in airmail red with red value labels above them; no area fill.

Postmark:
- A circular date stamp (46px outer ring 2.2px navy, 25px inner ring 1.4px) rotated -12 degrees, set just past the end of the title so it frames the headline without covering any letters. Around the ring, the place name in Barlow 11px 700 with 3.2px letter-spacing on a circular path; inside, the date in Special Elite 12px on two lines. Four wavy cancellation lines (2px navy, 24px wavelength, 7px amplitude) run from its right side toward the PAR AVION label.
- Give the postmark 78% opacity and a patchy inked look: mask it with fractal noise (base frequency 0.9) so a few specks drop out. Apply the filter to an untransformed wrapper group so the rotation doesn't clip it.

Avoid: a legend for a single series, rounded bars, gradients, drop shadows, more than two red marks, stamp or postmark decoration that covers data, and em dashes.

When you're done, render the chart and check that the stripe border is even on all four sides, the postmark overlaps the title without hiding more than a few letters, the red accents appear only on the peak and latest values, and every label clears the line and gridlines.
