Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Accession Sources" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the annual review of a museum department, printed on good off-white stock. A high-contrast Didone headline, a calm humanist sans for everything else, four earthy source colors and one milestone told in a sentence.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #FAF8F3 (off-white).
- Series, bottom to top of each stack: #2E5D43 (deep green, fieldwork), #C69A3D (ochre, donations), #5A7291 (slate blue, exchanges), #A3A09A (warm gray, purchases). Keep this order in the stack and the legend.
- Ink (title, totals, rules, baseline): #1D1F1C. Secondary text: #6B6A64. Gridlines: #D6D2C8.
- Segment separators: 1px strokes in the page color #FAF8F3.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- Bodoni Moda 700, 34px, #1D1F1C for the title, stating the finding. Bodoni Moda italic 400, 17px for the annotation headline.
- Inclusive Sans 400 for everything else: eyebrow 11px uppercase with 2.2px letter-spacing in #6B6A64; subtitle 15px #6B6A64 with measure and unit; legend 13px ink; totals above bars 12px ink (15px for the highlighted category); category labels 13px #6B6A64 (the highlighted one in ink); annotation body 13px #6B6A64; source 12px.

Layout:
- 56px side margins. Eyebrow at y 50, title at y 94, subtitle at y 122.
- A full-width 0.8px ink rule at y 156 that carries the legend: 12px square swatches sitting just above the rule with labels 18px to their right, items about 30px apart, starting at the left margin.
- Plot from x 96 to 904, baseline at y 520, top at about y 186. Source line at y 574.

Axes and grid:
- Horizontal 0.8px #D6D2C8 gridlines at round values, labels right-aligned 12px left of the plot. A 1px ink baseline. No y-axis line, no vertical gridlines.

Marks:
- Bar chart: stacked vertical square-cornered columns about 60% of the band (44px at 11 categories), segments separated by 1px off-white strokes; the stack total centered 8px above each column.
- Line chart: four 2px lines in the same colors (fieldwork on top of the draw order), straight segments, with small same-colored dots at each point and labels at the right end instead of the legend swatches; the legend rule stays as the header.

Labels and annotation:
- One milestone note: a 0.8px ink horizontal leader starting with a 2px ink dot on the relevant segment, then a Bodoni italic headline ("The Aldmere bequest, 1964") and two lines of 13px sans explaining the number. Place it in clear space to the right, above the neighboring columns.

Avoid: more than one annotation, gradients, rounded bars, bold sans text, a boxed legend, dark backgrounds and saturated primaries.

When you're done, render the chart and check that totals equal the stacked segments, the legend order matches the stack order, the annotation's number matches its segment, and no total label touches the legend rule.
