Chart Prompts

1,337 ways to dress a line or bar chart, 669 light and 668 dark. Open any chart to see it full size and copy a prompt that gives your own chart the same look.

Every chart uses illustrative data. The prompts work with any coding agent and any charting library; they describe colors, type, spacing and marks precisely enough to reproduce each look.

Ablation Study

Signed teal and rose deltas diverging from a heavy full-model zero line.

  • Baseline black#1B1B1B
  • Warm gray#EEEBE6
  • Card#FFFFFF

Prompt for your coding agent

Paste it with your chart's code. It restyles your data to match this chart.

Restyle my chart in the "Ablation Study" style described below. Keep my data, chart type, title meaning and units; change only the presentation. Use the charting library this project already uses (plain SVG if there is none). If the library can't express a detail, draw it in a custom layer instead of dropping it. Measurements assume a 960 x 600 chart; scale them proportionally.

Mood: the ablation figure of a machine learning paper. Every mark is a change relative to the full model, drawn as a thick black zero line, so the reader sees at a glance which components pull their weight. Calm warm-gray page, white plot card, two colors that mean better and worse.

Colors (use these exact values):
- Page: #EEEBE6 (warm gray). Plot card: #FFFFFF with a 1px #DDD8D0 border and 4px radius.
- Gains (removing the component helps, value above zero): #14A094 (teal). Losses (value below zero): #B8325A (rose).
- Zero baseline, error caps and main text: #1B1B1B. Secondary text: #6A655E. Row dividers and dashed gridlines: #ECE9E4. Group dividers: #DCD7CF.

Typography (Google Fonts):
- IBM Plex Sans for the title (700, 26px, -0.3px letter-spacing, stating the finding), subtitle (15px, #6A655E, measure and unit), component labels (500, 15px, right-aligned), group headers (700, 16px) with a 12.5px #6A655E note under each ("full model 71.4%"), delta labels (600, 14px, in the bar's color), tick labels (12px), legend (13px) and source (12px).
- IBM Plex Serif italic (14.5px) for the caption, led by "Figure 5." in IBM Plex Sans 600 roman.

Layout:
- Title at y 54 and subtitle at y 82, left at x 48. The white card spans x 32 to 928, y 106 to 512.
- Component labels in a left column, right-aligned at x 190, written ablation-style with a minus sign and a space: "− attention", "− reranker", "− curriculum".
- Three side-by-side panels, one per group (task), from x 206 to 904 with 30px gaps; each panel has its own zero line and the same x scale. A 1px #DCD7CF vertical divider centered in each gap. Group headers sit above each panel, left-aligned.
- Rows 54px tall separated by 1px #ECE9E4 lines across the full width. Legend row inside the card below the tick labels: rose swatch "Worse without it", teal swatch "Better without it", a 3px black bar "Full model", and "Error caps: ±1 s.d., 3 seeds" right-aligned.
- Two-line caption below the card at y 544 and 564, source at y 590.

Axes and grid:
- No axis lines except the zero baseline: a 3px #1B1B1B vertical line in every panel, running 6px above the first row to 4px below the last.
- Dashed 1px #ECE9E4 gridlines (2 on, 3 off) at -10 and -5, labeled with true minus signs in 12px; the 0 label is 600 weight in #1B1B1B.

Marks:
- Bar chart: horizontal diverging bars 24px tall with square corners, growing from zero: rose for negative deltas, teal for positive. A 1.1px #1B1B1B error bar through the bar end with 9px caps. Signed delta labels ("−6.2", "+0.8") 6px beyond the error cap for negative bars; for positive bars put the label on the opposite side of the zero line (8px left of it) so it never collides with the next panel.
- Line chart: plot each variant's change against the full model as a 2px line colored by sign of its final value, with a 3px black horizontal zero line for the full model, 4px dots at each point, ±1 s.d. as a 15% band of the line's color and signed end labels.

Avoid: a separate color per component, gradients, rounded bars, a y-axis line, unsigned numbers, hyphens in place of minus signs, and gridlines crossing the labels.

When you're done, render the chart and check that every delta carries an explicit sign, the most harmful ablation is visibly the longest rose bar in each group, labels stay inside their own panel, and the zero line reads as the heaviest element.
