Task-performance benefits of language-neuron interventions

Determine whether interventions on language-specific neurons identified by distribution-aware language-neuron selection can improve downstream task performance, rather than merely alter language generation or isolate causal language-specific effects.

Background

The paper demonstrates that positive- and negative-region language neurons have distinct causal roles in language switching during generation. However, the experiments primarily validate faithful neuron identification and causal selectivity, rather than seeking to improve downstream task performance through intervention.

The authors explicitly distinguish performance enhancement from their identification objective and leave unresolved whether the identified interventions can improve task performance. This question concerns the practical utility of language-neuron manipulation beyond interpretability and controlled language switching.
