Dissociation of syntax and semantics beyond individual voxels

Determine whether syntactic and semantic processing in the human language network dissociate at a level of description other than individual voxels.

Background

The paper motivates its subspace-level modularity framework by contrasting it with prior neuroimaging findings. Although individual voxels in the human language network have not shown reliable selectivity for syntax relative to semantics, the authors explicitly leave unresolved whether these functions might separate at a different representational level.

Yet whether these functions might dissociate at a different level of description remains an open question.
