Identify and characterize the downstream computation that converts a residual-stream displacement toward the probe-decoded binding at the validation-selected read layer into a change in the model’s output.

Background

The intervention establishes a causal relationship between displacement toward the probe-decoded binding and improved behavior, but the mechanism by which that displacement affects subsequent computation and the final output remains unresolved. A Jacobian measurement shows that output sensitivity to the binding direction does not decrease on wrong trials, ruling out one possible explanation—that the readout cannot access the binding—without identifying the actual downstream mechanism.
