LiDAR-free 3D recovery from radar

Establish LiDAR-free three-dimensional scene recovery from radar, also known as shape-from-radar, without relying on a co-registered LiDAR point cloud for geometric initialization.

Background

The 3D Point Splatting framework initializes its oriented point set from a co-registered LiDAR point cloud because sparse radar views, sparse radar returns, and elevation integration in two-dimensional range–azimuth supervision make three-dimensional structure difficult to recover from radar data alone. Consequently, the presented method is dependent on an external geometric prior and does not solve radar-only scene reconstruction.

The paper explicitly identifies LiDAR-free three-dimensional recovery from radar as outside the scope of the proposed renderer. Resolving this problem would enable radar-only novel-view synthesis in deployments where co-registered LiDAR is unavailable or undesirable.
