Non-invertible symmetry and vertex operator algebra outer-automorphism

Published 19 Aug 2026 in hep-th | (2608.18926v1)

Abstract: We argue that the non-invertible symmetry of N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory, obtained by combining S-duality, half-space gauging, and R-symmetry twist, is realized as an outer-automorphism of the associated vertex operator algebra. Hence, the Schur and Macdonald index of N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory with non-invertible symmetry twist corresponds to the (refined) vacuum character of the associated vertex operator algebra with the outer-automorphism twist. We provide a few checks of our proposal from the large-NN limit and by matching the fusion rules, which involve charge conjugation on local operators. The `charged' Schur index indeed matches the outer-automorphism-twisted vacuum character.

Summary

  • The paper establishes a dictionary in which supersymmetrized duality and triality defects in 4D N=4 SU(N) super Yang–Mills act as outer automorphisms of the associated vertex operator algebra, equating twisted Schur and Macdonald indices with refined twisted vacuum characters.
  • The paper validates this correspondence through large-N type IIB supergravity calculations and defect-fusion tests, with explicit agreement for N=2, 3, and 4 and agreement through order q^4 for N≤8.
  • The paper identifies key limitations and next steps, including proving the finite-N action for N≥3, deriving the twisted index directly at strong coupling, and using lens-space indices to detect condensation defects and other global non-invertible data.

Overview

This paper establishes a precise dictionary between the supersymmetric non-invertible symmetries (NIS) of four-dimensional N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory with gauge group SU(N)SU(N) and outer automorphisms of the associated vertex operator algebra (VOA). The central claim is that the Schur and Macdonald indices computed with an insertion of the non-invertible duality defect coincide with the (refined) vacuum characters of the VOA V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1}) twisted by its outer automorphism, combined with a discrete RR-symmetry rotation. The proposal is supported by two independent checks: agreement with the large-NN index computed from type IIB supergravity, and consistency with the defect fusion rules via matching against the independently computable charge-conjugation ("charged") index.

Supersymmetrized duality defects in N=4\mathcal{N}=4 SYM

The construction starts from the Montonen–Olive SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z}) S-duality of SU(N)SU(N) SYM. Since the SS transformation changes the global form of the gauge group (SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_0), it becomes a genuine symmetry only after combining with gauging of the SU(N)SU(N)0 one-form symmetry and possibly a discrete theta counterterm. At the self-dual coupling SU(N)SU(N)1, half-space application of SU(N)SU(N)2 (for SU(N)SU(N)3) or SU(N)SU(N)4 (for SU(N)SU(N)5) produces a topological duality defect; analogously, at SU(N)SU(N)6 one obtains a triality defect from SU(N)SU(N)7. Because SU(N)SU(N)8 and SU(N)SU(N)9 act on the supercharges by phases V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})0 with V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})1, V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})2 and V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})3 respectively, these defects break supersymmetry unless supplemented by a discrete V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})4 rotation V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})5 with generator V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})6. The resulting defects V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})7 and V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})8 preserve at least V(AN−1)\mathcal{V}(A_{N-1})9 supersymmetry (and RR0 for RR1).

The NIS-twisted Schur index as a twisted VOA character

The NIS-twisted Schur index is defined as a trace over the RR2 Hilbert space with the defect inserted along a point of the thermal circle:

RR3

where RR4 is the charge under the RR5 transformation. A direct gauge-theory computation is obstructed because the RR6 action exchanges electric and magnetic variables, so the paper instead identifies this object with the outer-automorphism-twisted character of the W-algebra RR7 truncated to RR8 at central charge RR9:

NN0

The key observation is that the NN1 "bonus" rotation with angle NN2, which acts identically to the duality defect on all supercharges, survives on the VOA as the NN3 outer automorphism under which the supercurrents NN4 and NN5 form a doublet. Using a Schur's lemma argument, the authors show that the difference between the defect action and the NN6 action commutes with the full NN7 algebra and hence acts as a phase on each superconformal multiplet; this phase is fixed to unity for the stress-tensor multiplet (proving the identification rigorously for NN8) and conjectured to be unity for all NN9 generators at finite N=4\mathcal{N}=40, based on the large-N=4\mathcal{N}=41 gravity analysis.

Large-N=4\mathcal{N}=42 check

At large N=4\mathcal{N}=43, the N=4\mathcal{N}=44 duality lifts to N=4\mathcal{N}=45 whose Cartan is precisely N=4\mathcal{N}=46, making the bulk computation unambiguous. Summing over the Kaluza–Klein graviton multiplets N=4\mathcal{N}=47 of AdSN=4\mathcal{N}=48 and taking the plethystic exponential yields an infinite product for the defect Schur index that is identical to the twisted character of the universal N=4\mathcal{N}=49 algebra. This provides strong evidence that the NIS action on the chiral algebra is exactly the outer automorphism.

Fusion rules and the charged index

The fusion rules are refined relative to earlier work: acting twice with the duality defect does not return the identity but leaves the center of SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})0, giving

SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})1

with SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})2 the charge conjugation, SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})3 the combination of the SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})4 center and SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})5, and SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})6 the condensation defect. The triality defect satisfies an analogous cubic rule with an additional SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})7 Chern–Simons TQFT insertion.

The paper tests this at the level of the Schur index. On the VOA side, fusing two defects amounts to setting SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})8 in the twisted character. On the gauge-theory side, the right-hand side is the charge-conjugation-twisted index, computed by folding the gauge group SL(2,Z)SL(2,\mathbb{Z})9 to SU(N)SU(N)0 for even SU(N)SU(N)1 and SU(N)SU(N)2 for odd SU(N)SU(N)3, together with a modified single-letter index incorporating the SU(N)SU(N)4 fugacity. The two computations agree explicitly for SU(N)SU(N)5 and, up to order SU(N)SU(N)6, for all SU(N)SU(N)7. This is a substantive confirmation: the "charged" Schur index — a purely invertible, well-defined gauge-theoretic quantity — reproduces the double-defect fusion product predicted by the VOA twist.

Macdonald refinement

The proposal extends to the Macdonald index using the SU(N)SU(N)8-filtration of the VOA, whose weight is identified with the SU(N)SU(N)9 SS0 charge. The refined twisted character is obtained from the same short/long SS1 multiplet formulas by the substitution SS2. The large-SS3 supergravity computation again matches the refined character of SS4, and the fusion-rule check against the charged Macdonald index succeeds for SS5 explicitly and up to SS6 for all SS7.

Limitations and open questions

Several caveats qualify the results. The identification of the defect action with the outer automorphism is proven only for SS8; for SS9 it relies on the conjecture that the phase SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_00 attaching to each SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_01 multiplet equals one at finite SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_02, extrapolated from large SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_03. The direct localization computation of the NIS-twisted index in the gauge theory is left open, since the free-field letter methods are not justified at the strongly coupled self-dual point where the defect exists. Moreover, the superconformal index on SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_04 is blind to the global part of the fusion rules — the condensation defect and TQFT insertions — so the genuinely non-invertible structure is invisible in this observable. The paper proposes the lens space index on SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_05, known to reproduce twisted-module characters of the VOA, as the natural arena to probe non-invertibility, and raises the question of whether the twisted VOA structure organizes into the chiral tube algebra. Finally, the generalization to other theories — in particular class SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_06 SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_07 SCFTs, where non-invertible defects have been classified and VOA automorphisms are known to exist (e.g., the genus-two SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_08 theory) — remains conjectural.

Conclusion

The paper extends the SCFT/VOA correspondence to incorporate topological defects: the supersymmetrized non-invertible duality and triality defects of SU(N)→PSU(N)0SU(N) \to PSU(N)_09 SU(N)SU(N)00 SYM act on the protected chiral algebra as outer automorphisms, so that defect-twisted Schur and Macdonald indices equal outer-automorphism-twisted vacuum characters. The dictionary passes nontrivial consistency tests from holography and from defect fusion rules matched against charge-conjugation indices through SU(N)SU(N)01, while leaving open the finite-SU(N)SU(N)02 proof, the direct gauge-theory derivation, and probes of the global (non-invertible) part of the fusion structure on topologically nontrivial manifolds.
