Background

The paper operationalizes epistemic warrant for individual LLM recommendations through a four-level reliance certificate: No Warrant, Conditional Warrant, Basic Warrant, and Strong Warrant. Although this categorical summary is interpretable, the certificate also retains richer information, including tier-level violation counts and the specific probes or contexts that cause a recommendation to reverse.

The unresolved issue is how this information should be represented and used by decision makers. A categorical certificate may be easy to interpret but discard detail, whereas graded or hybrid representations may provide greater resolution at the cost of complexity. It is also unknown whether exposing the contexts that produce recommendation reversals helps users make better reliance and verification decisions or instead creates additional cognitive burden.
