Hardware validation of post-quantum CASE performance

Validate the modeled latency, frame counts, and energy consumption of post-quantum Matter CASE handshakes over Thread on nRF52840 and ESP32-H2 hardware using a sniffer and power analyzer.

Background

The paper’s quantitative results are based on byte-exact message models and Monte Carlo simulations calibrated to Matter and OpenThread source constants. Although these models estimate handshake latency, retransmissions, failure rates, radio activity, and energy implications, the authors have not yet tested the results on physical devices. Hardware measurements are therefore needed to determine how closely the simulated performance reflects real Matter-over-Thread deployments, including the behavior of sleepy devices and the proposed transport mechanisms.

References

All results are from models and simulation. We have not yet measured them on hardware; §IX-C states what this implies for each result.

We have not evaluated Matter’s TCP transport: Thread devices rarely implement it, and it adds a connection setup and per-connection state before CASE begins, but TCP over Thread can perform well [23] and is a natural baseline for future work.
