Generalizability to Broader Tonal Phenomena

Determine whether the ToneCL framework generalizes from isolated single-tone classification to broader tonal phenomena, including tone sandhi, tonal coarticulation, anticipatory effects, carryover effects, connected speech, and multi-syllable contexts.

Background

ToneCL is evaluated on isolated single tones, reflecting the minimal citation-tone unit in languages such as Mandarin. The paper acknowledges that this setting excludes important phonological and phonetic phenomena, including tone sandhi, tonal coarticulation, anticipatory and carryover effects, connected speech, and multi-syllable contexts.

Because these phenomena can substantially alter tonal realization, performance on isolated syllables does not establish whether ToneCL can support tone analysis in naturalistic or prosodically complex speech. The authors therefore explicitly leave the broader generalizability of the approach unresolved.

The generalizability of our approach to broader tonal phenomena remains an open question.
