Scalability of WbLS to large-scale detector applications

Determine whether Water-based Liquid Scintillator (WbLS) can be scaled to large-scale detector applications.

Background

Water-based liquid scintillators (WbLS) enable simultaneous detection of Cherenkov and scintillation light and are being considered by several experiments for hybrid event detection. The authors constructed a 1-ton WbLS detector as a testbed to paper performance and stability.

Despite these developments, the authors explicitly flag uncertainty about whether WbLS can be effectively scaled to larger detectors, identifying the scalability to large-scale applications as an open question.
