Establish the feasibility of indium-loaded LiquidO solar-neutrino detection

Establish whether the LiquidO opaque-scintillator technique can provide sufficient topological rejection to detect solar neutrinos with an indium-loaded target despite indium’s severe intrinsic beta-decay background.

Background

The proposed indium-based detection scheme would identify low-energy solar neutrinos through a double-flash coincidence, potentially overcoming the intrinsic carbon-14 background that limits organic scintillator detectors. However, indium itself is strongly radioactive, and the paper identifies the ability of LiquidO’s imaging and spatial resolution to reject this background as an unresolved experimental issue to be tested by the ongoing demonstration programme.

This is a design goal, and whether LiquidO can deliver the required rejection is exactly a question to be addressed by the ongoing demonstration programme.
