Magic-angle sequences and gauge structure in chiral moiré systems

Determine whether a rescaling argument analogous to the one for chiral twisted bilayer graphene fixes the magic-angle sequences of other chiral moiré systems, such as twisted multilayer graphene with higher-Chern-number flat bands, and establish whether their gauge structures extend beyond SU(2).

Background

The paper develops a rescaling explanation for the asymptotic magic-angle spacing in chiral twisted bilayer graphene: the coupling parameter rescales the moiré potential, while a three-cell translation structure imposes a commensurability condition. The authors suggest applying the squared-Hamiltonian and non-Abelian gauge-field framework to other moiré systems possessing a chiral limit, including twisted multilayer graphene where flat bands with higher Chern numbers occur.

It remains unresolved whether the same rescaling mechanism determines the magic-angle sequences in those systems and whether the corresponding effective gauge fields retain an SU(2) structure or require a more general gauge group.

References

Several questions remain open. The squared-Hamiltonian approach should apply to other moiré systems with a chiral limit, such as twisted multilayer graphene, where flat bands with higher Chern numbers are known . It would be interesting to see whether a similar rescaling argument fixes their magic-angle sequences, and whether their gauge structure goes beyond $SU(2)$. A second direction is to use the coherent-state basis of Sec.~\ref{sec:localization}, labelled by the angular momentum $m$, as a starting point for projecting the Coulomb interaction, and to compare the resulting pairing estimates with the geometric superfluid weight of Eq.~eq:Dsconvgeom.
