Limits of TPSM for drastic nuclear shape changes

Determine to what extent the present triaxial projected shell model, including angular-momentum-projected zero-, two-, and four-quasiparticle configurations, can account for more drastic nuclear shape changes than those encountered in the studied nuclei.

Background

The study finds that quasiparticle admixtures in the triaxial projected shell model generate microscopic shape fluctuations and enable the model to reproduce nuclei exhibiting γ-soft characteristics, despite its fixed triaxial mean-field starting point. The authors conclude that it remains unresolved whether the present TPSM configuration space can describe substantially larger or more drastic shape changes than those observed in the nuclei analyzed.
