Generalize decoded-state intervention beyond the synthetic binding protocol

Determine whether the positive effect of probe-decoded residual-stream steering on in-context binding errors persists under the conditions studied by prior work on intervention-resistant errors, including their tasks and intervention settings.

Background

The paper demonstrates that steering the residual stream toward a probe-decoded binding improves accuracy on a controlled synthetic entity–obligation binding task. However, the intervention differs from prior studies in task, intervention site, direction construction, and use of a trial-specific decoded target. The authors therefore explicitly leave unresolved whether their positive result would transfer to the conditions under which those studies reported unsuccessful interventions.
