Modern work formalizes information efficiency through rate-distortion relations, mutual information inequalities, entropy production bounds, and thermodynamic frameworks, providing sharp constraints on attainable performance and guiding optimal design strategies across disciplines.

1. Foundations: Definitions and General Principles

Information efficiency is formalized as the ratio of useful information acquired to the physical or computational resources expended. In thermodynamic and learning systems, the "information-to-work" efficiency is

with upper bounds enforced by fundamental laws such as the second law of thermodynamics or mutual information constraints. In communication networks or computation, information efficiency may be measured as the ratio of required communication rate to minimal entropy, again bounded from above or below by information-theoretic quantities such as mutual information, channel capacity, or Fisher information.

2. Thermodynamic and Stochastic Bounds

Thermodynamic approaches express information efficiency in terms of entropy production, entropy flows, measurement, and erasure costs. For Markovian bipartite systems, the efficiency of converting entropy flow or resource expenditure into information gain is bounded tightly by Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities on Markov fluxes and system activity. For a stochastic variable y1y_1 in a coarse-grained system:

This bound is universally stronger than Clausius' inequality, applying to both nonequilibrium thermodynamic sensors and biochemical learning networks.

For bipartite thermodynamic systems, upper and lower bounds on subsystem efficiency ηA\eta^A or ηB\eta^B can be constructed via:

Dissipation-information trade-offs in nonequilibrium engines, including measurement/Maxwell-demon feedback, are governed by generalized second law bounds incorporating mutual information terms and enable regimes where engine efficiency can, in principle, exceed the classical Carnot bound, up to η=1\eta=1 if information is perfectly utilized for work extraction (Xiao et al., 17 Jul 2025).

3. Information-Theoretic Communication and Computation

In distributed computation and communication, information efficiency bounds characterize the minimal communication rate required for function computation or data transmission, given the function structure and network topology. For multiround function computation in collocated networks:

For symmetric binary functions and i.i.d. In inverse and semiparametric estimation problems, the semiparametric Fisher information for a linear functional χ\chi embeds the constraint:

5. Quantum, Finite-Time, and Feedback-Assisted Engine Bounds

The performance of quantum information engines is limited by measurement duration and finite-time effects. Information-to-work efficiency, thermodynamic efficiency, and output power obey multi-objective Pareto bounds:
