Particle swarm optimization of divertor targets for heat load control
Abstract: Divertor targets in magnetic confinement fusion devices must be designed to handle extreme heat loads. Fast approximation of heat loads with FLARE based on field line reconstruction from an unstructured flux tube mesh is utilized in particle swarm optimization (PSO) of the divertor target geometry. Optimization of the outer divertor target in ITER is evaluated with a constraint for the head loads onto baffles. The optimal configuration is found to depend on assumptions for the background plasma in the heat load proxy simulation.
