Test the long-term stability of convective-reactive layer classifications

Determine whether the Type I–V convective-reactive layer classification remains unchanged on timescales substantially longer than those covered by the simulated oxygen–neon shell merger.

Background

The RANS profiles reach a quasi-steady state during the analysed interval, and the Type I–V classification remains unchanged over that period. Nevertheless, the authors identify marginal cases involving small composition gradients, proximity to the turbulent base, or competition between production and entrainment-driven dilution.

The simulation duration is insufficient to establish whether these classifications persist over much longer evolutionary times. Longer three-dimensional simulations are therefore needed to assess the temporal robustness of the inferred layering.

References

Whether the classification remains unchanged on timescales considerably longer than those simulated here cannot be assessed with the present data and requires longer simulations.
