Stability and non-breaking of D1 strings in the IKKT matrix model

Demonstrate that D1-string excitations in the IKKT matrix model are stable when embedded in the nontrivial emergent cosmological background and, in particular, prove that such D1 strings cannot break.

Background

The proposed decompactification mechanism depends on the presence of D1-strings in the thermal state and their subsequent annihilation only where worldsheet intersections can occur, constraining the number of dimensions that become large. This reasoning implicitly assumes the stability of D1-strings as excitations in the matrix model and that they do not spontaneously break.

Establishing stability and non-breaking is necessary to ensure the robustness of the symmetry-breaking explanation and to rule out alternate decay channels that could modify the dimensionality outcome.

There are lots of open issues. It is also important to demonstrate that the D1 strings in the matrix model are stable and in particular cannot break.
