Dependence of nonvisual guidance benefits on visual bandwidth

Determine whether the performance advantage of auditory and haptic guidance over visual guidance increases as available visual bandwidth decreases in simulated prosthetic vision and other constrained extended-reality displays.

Background

The study found that auditory and haptic guidance outperformed visual guidance under both tested simulated prosthetic-vision conditions, which differed in electrode density and phosphene spread. However, the relative advantage of nonvisual guidance did not significantly increase between the two tested visual-resolution regimes. The authors therefore identify as unresolved whether progressively more severe visual-bandwidth limitations amplify the benefit of moving guidance information outside the visual channel.
