Electrical characteristics and PLDN proxy capability for severe hail detection in Bulacan

Evaluate whether lightning observations from the PAGASA Lightning Detection Network can reliably serve as a proxy for detecting severe hail-producing storms in Bulacan and adjacent areas by analyzing a larger sample of severe and non-severe cases.

Background

The paper leverages PLDN lightning data to examine the temporal evolution of electrical activity relative to storm intensification and hail occurrence. While the event shows promising correspondence between increased lightning and severe hail, the authors caution against overgeneralization due to limited regional knowledge of storm electrical behavior.

A broader dataset is required to rigorously assess PLDN’s effectiveness as an operational proxy for hail nowcasting in the region, including evaluating lightning-jump algorithms across diverse storm types and environments.

Little is known about the electrical characteristics of the storms that affect the province of Bulacan, and although the results shown here are promising, further research based on a larger sample of severe and non-severe storms is needed to properly evaluate the capabilities of using PLDN as a proxy for severe hail detection in the region.
