Establish whether J0011+3443 is a dual active galactic nucleus

Establish whether J0011+3443 contains two independently active supermassive black holes rather than the two hotspot or lobe complexes of a compact symmetric object, using multi-epoch astrometry and related follow-up observations.

Background

The two compact components of J0011+3443 are separated by approximately 314 pc, a scale at which a dual-AGN system is physically possible. The similar steep spectra, comparable brightness temperatures, nearly constant flux-density ratio, and absence of a detected flat-spectrum core instead favor a compact symmetric object in which A and B are lobe or hotspot complexes.

The dual-AGN interpretation remains unresolved because the available observations do not definitively identify independent active nuclei. The paper specifically identifies multi-epoch astrometry as necessary to test this possibility, while multi-epoch 23.6 GHz imaging could also reveal motion of feature C and help distinguish jet or hotspot structure from an active nucleus.
