Unified scheme for AGN across classes

Establish whether a unified scheme, defined by a limited set of fundamental parameters, can explain the diverse multiwavelength observational phenomena of active galactic nuclei across different classes, including jet formation and accretion states.

Background

The authors contextualize their incidence analysis within broader efforts to unify AGN phenomenology. Historical approaches include orientation-based unified models and evolutionary schemes, as well as scaling relations like the Fundamental Plane of black hole accretion.

Despite progress, a comprehensive, parameter-sparse scheme that accounts for the wide diversity of AGN observational properties remains an explicitly stated open question.

One of the main open questions in the study of AGN of different classes is whether there exists some `unified scheme' able to explain, with limited numbers of fundamental parameters, the vast and varied observational phenomena from these extreme objects.

We caution that these interpretations are qualitative; a systematic comparison of the three group distributions against photoionization models across the complete accretion parameter space would be needed to place them on a quantitative footing, and we defer this comparison to future work.
