Determine whether community maturity drives the prevalence gap

Determine whether the difference in gossip prevalence between the long-established PTT community and the seven-week-old Moltbook community is caused by community maturity.

Background

The paper considers whether PTT’s two decades of persistent interaction and Moltbook’s seven-week history could explain differences between the communities. The available data reject a maturity-based explanation for the uptake gap: PTT’s challenge rates show no meaningful time trend across the observed decade.

The same assessment cannot be made for gossip prevalence because the prevalence sample is concentrated in 2022–2023, contains only 18 posts from before 2013, and contains no posts from 2004 or 2005. Thus, whether community maturity accounts for the prevalence difference remains an explicitly open empirical question.

References

The prevalence side of the same objection is not testable in this sample. Posts were drawn in proportion to corpus volume, which is concentrated in 2022 and 2023, so the 1,500-post random sample contains only 18 posts from before 2013 and none from 2004 or 2005. No board supplies enough early material for a within-board time series either. We report the objection as open on RQ1 and answered on the uptake gap.
