Unknown source type for a sizable proportion of OpenAlex articles

Determine the source category (journal, repository, conference, or other) for OpenAlex works classified as articles whose source type is currently labeled as unknown, in order to improve metadata completeness and support reliable bibliometric analyses.

Background

The paper partitions OpenAlex articles by the type of source in which they were published (journal, repository, conference, or other) and observes that a substantial subset of articles have an unknown source type. This unknown classification limits the ability to interpret document distributions and compare indexing policies between databases.

Resolving the unknown source type would enhance the accuracy of document-type and venue-based analyses and facilitate more robust comparisons with Scopus and other bibliographic databases.
