Determine the cause of zero arXiv retrieval results

Determine why arXiv returned zero hits for every query in both iterations of the Optimist Deep Research case study, including whether the LLM-generated arXiv queries were overly specific.

Background

The case study routed searches to arXiv, OpenAlex, and Crossref. Whereas OpenAlex and Crossref returned substantial numbers of results, arXiv returned none in either iteration. The paper suggests that arXiv’s literal AND-combined matching may have made the generated queries too specific, but does not establish that explanation. Resolving the cause is important because unsuccessful source queries still consume the search budget and may reduce literature coverage.

References

No arXiv hits. arXiv returned zero hits for every query in both iterations, while OpenAlex and Crossref returned 135 and 60 in the first. The literal, AND-combined matching suggests the LLM-generated arXiv queries were too specific, but we have not confirmed the cause.
