Communication Protocols for Advanced AI Agents and Digital Systems

Determine and specify secure, interoperable communication mechanisms and protocols by which advanced AI agents will interact with one another and with non-AI digital systems, enabling governable, privacy-preserving, and safe coordination in multi-agent environments.

Background

Large-scale multi-agent ecosystems will require standardized ways for AI agents to interact with each other and with existing digital infrastructure. Without clear protocols, security, privacy, and reliability risks increase, and critical safeguards (e.g., commitments, verification, containment) are harder to implement.

Designing communication and training protocols is essential to support secure, accountable, and manageable interactions in safety-critical domains. While preliminary proposals exist, the fundamental question of how agents will communicate remains unresolved.

References

At the time of writing, it remains unclear how advanced AI agents will communicate with one another and with the vast network of other non-AI digital systems with which they will be integrated, though there have very recently begun to be some proposals in this direction.
