Background

Research on misinformation dissemination has shown that a small fraction of users—often called superspreaders—account for most low-credibility content shared on social media, and these users tend to post more toxic language and display strong political orientations.

With the rise of generative AI, a new class of content (AIGC) is being spread online, but whether the users who disproportionately share AIGC resemble misinformation superspreaders in their traits and behaviors has not been established. This work highlights that this relationship had not been directly studied prior to their investigation.

While AIGC clearly represents a new form of inauthentic content, it is still unknown whether superspreaders of AI-generated content display similar characteristics to misinformation superspreaders, yet, to the best of our knowledge, no prior work has examined this prolific group of users.
