Modern physically-based ray tracing unifies classical geometric optics, wave optics, and radiative transfer using advanced algorithms, efficient parallelization strategies, hardware acceleration, and flexible mathematical formulations to bridge the gap between predictive simulation and efficient rendering or field modeling.
1. Core Principles and Mathematical Foundations
At its foundation, physically-based ray tracing models the transport of radiance (or more generally, the electromagnetic field) along ray paths through a scene as governed by the rendering (or radiative transfer) equation. For optical simulation, the outgoing radiance at surface point in direction is captured by: where is emitted radiance, is incident radiance, is the surface normal, and is the bidirectional scattering distribution function (BSDF), a critical quantity for physically-based simulation (Keller et al., 2017).
Path tracing samples this equation via Monte Carlo integration by recursively tracing rays from the sensor (e.g., a camera or receiver) through a scene. Advanced models incorporate not only surface interactions but also spectral integration over wavelengths, wave-optical effects via the Wigner Distribution Function (WDF), and volumetric phenomena via the full radiative transfer equation (Abdellah et al., 2017, Li et al., 2023).
Nonlinear or inhomogeneous media (e.g., atmosphere, ocean, glass, or photochromic/electrochromic windows) are treated by tracing analytic or numerically determined curved ray trajectories governed by Fermat’s principle, local refractive index gradients, or sound speed profiles. balance splitting decisions between surface area and proximity to ray origins to reduce traversal cost and redundant checks. These techniques outperform grid-based or purely spatial decomposition strategies, particularly for highly irregular environments.
On the hardware side, modern frameworks leverage GPU acceleration (e.g., via NVIDIA OptiX, Vulkan, CUDA) for both primary and secondary ray evaluation. Cross-platform tools such as CrossRT translate hardware-agnostic C++ algorithms into specialized GPU or CPU kernels, supporting both monolithic megakernel (preferred in graphics) and wavefront (preferred in vision and neural field evaluation) implementations (Frolov et al., 19 Sep 2024).
