In the Schur Low Rank (SLR) method, the inverse S1S^{-1} is approximated by a sum of a sparse local preconditioner M1M^{-1} and a low-rank correction UΣ1UTU\Sigma^{-1}U^T, where the basis UU and spectrum Σ\Sigma are extracted via Lanczos or randomized sampling applied to matrix-free operator-vector products (Li et al., 2015).

Hierarchically semi-separable (HSS) and product-convolution approximations similarly enable fast, scalable application and inversion of Schur complements. HSS factorization recursively compresses off-diagonal blocks of the Schur complement, while product-convolution methods interpolate the operator from local impulse responses, achieving O(NlogN)O(N\log N) complexity and facilitating efficient Krylov preconditioners without ever assembling dense blocks (Gatto et al., 2015, Alger et al., 2018).

4. Applications in Domain Decomposition and Large-Scale PDEs

Matrix-free Schur complement operators are pivotal in domain decomposition, particularly for elliptic PDEs and large-scale parallel simulations. In primal Schur approaches, each subdomain computes local interface solves and communicates only on the interface, assembling the global Schur complement’s action distributively. Resilient asynchronous variants further decouple subdomain progress, handling faults and communication delays effectively by working with local Dirichlet solves and interface couplings only (Gbikpi-Benissan et al., 2023). Hybrid matrix-free ILU smoothers, built from surrogate polynomials of local stencils, reduce memory and computation further in large, structured mesh problems (Drzisga et al., 2022).

5. Preconditioning and Krylov Solvers

Matrix-free Schur complement approximations directly enable effective preconditioners for iterative methods including CG and GMRES. Two-level block preconditioners exploit local (interior) solves for AA and low-rank or hierarchical Schur approximations for the interface block, substantially improving spectral conditioning compared to classical approaches. In interior point methods, matrix-free Schur complement solvers allow the re-use of factorizations and efficient solution of the reduced KKT system, with tailored preconditioners that exploit the spectral structure of the Schur operator (Karim et al., 2021). Empirical results indicate ideal scaling in Krylov iteration counts as problem size increases and robustness with respect to coefficient variation, mesh refinement, or operator anisotropy (Gatto et al., 2015, Drzisga et al., 2022, Alger et al., 2018). Matrix-free approaches also facilitate flexible, adaptive accuracy/computation tradeoffs, as in product-convolution methods, where lower-rank approximations can still yield numerically robust preconditioners for interface Schur complements (Alger et al., 2018).

7. Practical Guidelines and Implementation Issues

A range of practical recommendations enables effective deployment of matrix-free Schur complement operators:

  • Use randomized error estimators to control adaptive surrogate construction (Alger et al., 2018).
  • Select preconditioners or low-rank ranks to balance convergence and per-application cost (Li et al., 2015, Karim et al., 2021).
  • Exploit FFT acceleration in product-convolution schemes and efficient sparse-direct or multigrid solvers for local subdomain problems (Alger et al., 2018, Drzisga et al., 2022).
  • In distributed memory contexts, prefer asynchronous communication for resilience and scalability, storing only local subdomain factors and minimal interface data (Gbikpi-Benissan et al., 2023).
  • Tune parameters such as polynomial order in surrogate-ILU methods to match stencil anisotropy and desired convergence rates (Drzisga et al., 2022). A plausible implication is that further improvements may arise from the integration of adaptive or learning-based surrogate construction, multilevel parallelization, and operator-aware preconditioner synthesis tailored to the underlying PDE or optimization structure.
