This article surveys the fundamental models, key algorithms, communication protocols, evaluation metrics, and benchmark results for bi-directional cooperative landing frameworks as established in the technical literature.

1. Core System Modeling and Problem Statement

Bi-directional cooperative landing frameworks model each agent's full nonlinear dynamics, including all relevant actuation channels, motion constraints, and disturbances. For UAV–platform systems, typical state vectors comprise inertial position and velocity, system attitude (Euler angles or rotation matrices), and actuator states. In human-in-the-loop frameworks, spoken intent is transduced using ASR/NLU pipelines, dialog state tracking, and confirmation routines to achieve shared situational awareness and plan agreement (Patrikar et al., 2022).

For distributed robotic platforms, bi-directional communication is frequently realized as:

  • Shared goal exchange: Each agent computes and transmits an optimized artificial landing goal (e.g., gu,gpg_u, g_p) rather than an entire trajectory, ensuring low bandwidth overhead (Stephenson et al., 2024, Stephenson et al., 2024).

Distributed MPC (DMPC) forms the predominant control backbone in research implementations. Each agent i solves an individual MPC problem to optimize a local cost subject to its own predictive model, agent constraints, the most recently received partner goal, and a set of consensus or coupling penalties.

Key features of DMPC frameworks:

  • Artificial goal coupling: Costs penalize goal mismatch (gugp)(g_u-g_p) (or vertically offset, to enforce safe hover), leading to bidirectional convergence without sharing full trajectories (Stephenson et al., 2024, Stephenson et al., 2024).
  • Disturbance-adaptive penalties: When environmental uncertainties (wave-induced tilt for floating platforms or unpredictable surface inclination) are present, the DMPC cost is augmented by tilt penalties. These penalties may be learned as a spatiotemporal Gaussian Process over ϕ(q,t)2\phi(q,t)^2 (deck tilt square at location-time), and the predicted mean/variance directly biases goal selection (Stephenson et al., 2024, Stephenson et al., 2024).
  • Sequential/asynchronous optimization: Each agent solves its subproblem on its own schedule, using the latest received partner goal, without global synchronization. Upon communication loss, feasible operation is retained using stale partner goals (Stephenson et al., 2024).
  • Complementarity constraints and role allocation: To dynamically determine which agent is responsible for closing the landing gap at each step, complementarity constraints over slack variables select between UAV- or UGV-leading approaches (Chen et al., 19 Feb 2025).

4. Sensing, Perception, and State Estimation

Perception subsystems are integrated tightly with the cooperative control loop. Robust state-awareness is achieved by fusing:

  • Vision-only detection pipelines (e.g., ResNet-50 feature-pyramid CNNs trained on synthetic data) for aircraft or platform pose estimates (Patrikar et al., 2022).
  • Multisensor fusion with RTK GNSS, IMU, and potentially off-board vision to provide accurate, low-latency position and attitude information between agents (Zhao et al., 6 Jan 2026, Stephenson et al., 2024).

In learning-augmented frameworks, online data from wave-tilt sensors are used to continually refine Gaussian Process hyperparameters, ensuring that the MPC's cost model for spatial/temporal platform dynamics remains up-to-date (Stephenson et al., 2024).

5. Cooperative Guidance, Control, and Execution

Landing is executed through a multi-stage planning and control scheme, often encompassing:

  • Parallelized alignment–descent planning: Instead of sequential align-then-descend (traditional methods), trajectory and attitude alignment phases are fused. The UAV and platform simultaneously maneuver to minimize positional and attitudinal mismatch, with the platform actively tilting or translating to enlarge feasible landing states (Zhao et al., 6 Jan 2026).
  • Minimum-jerk and time-optimal trajectory generation: Trajectories minimizing jerk or control effort allow aggressive, dynamically feasible sprints to landing, with boundary conditions set by the learned/communicated artificial landing goals (Zhao et al., 6 Jan 2026, Zhang et al., 2022).
  • On-line replanning: The planner rapidly recalculates trajectories (microseconds to milliseconds) at each update, responding to transient opportunities in the platform pose or environmental state (Zhao et al., 6 Jan 2026, Stephenson et al., 2024, Chen et al., 19 Feb 2025).
  • Safety invariance: Hard minimum separation constraints, glide path angle limits, touchdown dispersion requirements, and physically enforceable actuator bounds are encoded and checked at every step (Patrikar et al., 2022, Stephenson et al., 2024, Chen et al., 19 Feb 2025).
  • Mode sequencing FSMs: High-level finite state machines orchestrate transitions (e.g., hover → plan → align → land), always considering safety and feasibility (Zhang et al., 2022).

6. Evaluation Metrics and Experimental Results

Performance is quantified through a variety of objective metrics:

  • Safety margin violation rates: Percentage of time where separation (lateral, vertical) falls below prescribed thresholds (Patrikar et al., 2022).
  • Landing precision: Lateral and vertical touchdown standard deviations (e.g., σy,σh\sigma_y, \sigma_h) (Patrikar et al., 2022, Chen et al., 19 Feb 2025).

7. Generalization, Limitations, and Future Directions

Bi-directional cooperative landing frameworks generalize naturally to:

  • Multi-agent consensus for swarms or sequential landings where each agent must coordinate its plan with multiple partners in dynamic, constrained environments (Zhang et al., 2022).
  • Scenarios on deformable or complex platforms, including land-air robots with detailed coupled Lagrangian dynamic models that explicitly account for suspension, ground effect, and structural compliance (Zhang et al., 2022).
  • Maritime, ground, and air domains, with domain-specific cost and constraint adaptation to account for sea/waves, rough terrain, or airspace integration with human pilots (Patrikar et al., 2022, Stephenson et al., 2024).

Limitations reported include vision failures under glare, platform actuator speed bounds limiting tilt alignment, and increased computational demand in large-scale or high-frequency replanning. Future initiatives propose enhanced perception (infrared/active markers), explicit chance-constrained MPC for environmental uncertainty, faster servo hardware, and swarm-scale coordination architectures (Zhao et al., 6 Jan 2026, Stephenson et al., 2024).


Bi-directional cooperative landing frameworks, by elevating both (or all) agents to fully active, optimizing participants, achieve significantly higher landing efficiency, robustness, and safety than unilateral or decoupled approaches.
