Cause of vortex ring break-up in grid-resampled EPIC simulations

Determine whether the breaking-up of the vortex ring observed when resampling Elliptical Parcel-In-Cell (EPIC) parcel-based simulation data onto uniform rectilinear grids is caused by the interpolation schemes used during resampling, by systematically evaluating different resampling interpolants and analyzing their effects on vortex ring topology extracted via contour trees.

In the comparative analysis of parcel-based versus grid-resampled datasets, the authors observed that the vortex ring appears to break up in the gridded resampling, while the direct parcel-based computation yields more consistent toroidal structures.

They hypothesize that resampling interpolation may be responsible for this artifact but explicitly state they were unable to test this hypothesis within the scope of the paper, leaving the causal mechanism unresolved.

However, one effect that we had not anticipated was the breaking-up of the vortex ring in gridded resampling, with the direct parcel-based version producing more consistent results. We suspect that this is a side-effect of the interpolants used in the resampling, but were unable to test this.
