Variational derivation of the lowest-Landau-level drift response

Develop a variational or effective-action derivation of the mixed lowest-Landau-level stress response in the axial-metric/polar-gauge sector, analogous to the Wen–Zee analysis, to test the gradient corrections to the covariance-based drift-lift argument.

Background

The paper characterizes the admissible mixed stress responses through a family of covariant closures and argues that the drift lift is the unique one compatible with locality, general covariance, local Lorentz covariance, and the index-theorem structure of the lowest Landau level.

A variational derivation comparable to the Wen–Zee effective-action treatment would provide a first-principles confirmation of this constitutive relation. The unresolved derivation concerns the response of the fermionic stress tensor to crossed electric and magnetic fields, rather than the already-derived force-balance and charge-conservation identities.
