Transfer attraction-shape theory to synchronous UMAP updates

Determine whether the dynamical predictions of attraction-shape theory for pairwise UMAP transfer to synchronous updates used by ibUMAP.

Background

ibUMAP replaces UMAP’s online, in-place sampled interactions with synchronous force aggregation evaluated from a shared embedding snapshot. The paper studies the resulting optimizer under a fixed fuzzy graph and spectral initialization, but notes that these controlled experiments do not test whether theoretical predictions previously derived for pairwise UMAP dynamics remain valid under synchronous updates.

Resolving this question would clarify whether attraction-shape theory can explain or predict the local–global fidelity trade-offs observed for ibUMAP and could help establish a broader theoretical framework for synchronous field-based UMAP optimization.

Section~\ref{sec:field-dynamics} measures its final-quality effects under one fixed graph and spectral initialization, leaving robustness to other initializations untested, and whether the dynamical predictions of attraction-shape theory for pairwise UMAP \citep{islam2026shape} transfer to synchronous updates remains open.
