Synchronization for Coherent Multi-Node ISAC

Establish synchronization techniques and system support that provide the time, frequency, and phase alignment required for coherent multi-node ISAC processing across distributed sensing nodes in O-RAN/6GR deployments.

Background

Collaborative sensing across multiple RAN nodes requires precise synchronization to enable coherent processing of measurements from distributed radios. The paper’s architecture relies on multi-node fusion coordinated by xApps and processed measurements from dApps, which imposes stringent synchronization requirements that are not yet fully addressed.

The authors explicitly list synchronization across distributed sensing nodes as an open challenge that must be solved to realize coherent multi-node ISAC.

Several open challenges remain. On the technical side, synchronization across distributed sensing nodes is critical for coherent multi-node processing, and the E3 interface specification—data formats, access patterns, isolation from the communication pipeline—requires further design.
