Limiting behavior of static dipolar boson-star branches

Determine the complete limiting behavior and fully resolve the solution-space structure of static dipolar boson stars, including whether their mass-frequency sequence follows the usual spiral picture toward a limiting configuration.

Background

Static dipolar boson stars (DBSs) are non-spherical, static solutions of the Einstein–Klein–Gordon equations with azimuthal index m=0 and odd equatorial parity. Earlier numerical work obtained only part of the second branch of the mass-frequency curve because numerical errors increased as the scalar-field distribution became highly localized along the symmetry axis.

The paper extends that branch to its second back-bending, but the authors cannot continue the sequence because increasingly small frequency steps and insufficient spatial resolution prevent further computation. They report no pathological behavior and find results consistent with the spiral structure known for rotating boson stars, while emphasizing that the limiting behavior of DBSs is not yet fully understood. A more sophisticated mesh-adaptivity strategy is identified as necessary for resolving the localized scalar field and completing the analysis.

While a complete understanding of the limiting behavior for DBSs remains outstanding, our results are consistent with the usual spiral picture. Its full resolution would require a more involved mesh adaptivity strategy, which we leave for future work.
