Secondary peak in simulated recoil-direction reconstruction

Determine the origin of the secondary peak near 80 degrees in the simulation-based inference model for reconstructing recoil directions from three-dimensional vacancy distributions in diamond.

Background

The University of Maryland contribution develops a geometric graph-neural-network model to infer both recoil energy and direction from simulated three-dimensional vacancy distributions in diamond. The model performs better than conventional summary-feature methods across the studied energy range.

At 3 keV recoil energy, however, the reported angular reconstruction distribution contains an unexplained secondary peak near 80 degrees. The paper states that investigating this feature remains ongoing, so its origin and implications for low-energy directional reconstruction are unresolved.

References

GVP-EGNN is sharply peaked at small angles in both cases, though at 3~keV it exhibits a secondary peak near $80\circ$ that is still under investigation.
