Physical origin of flaring stars’ displacement above the main sequence

Determine the physical origin of the displacement of flaring stars above the main sequence in the Gaia Hertzsprung–Russell diagram.

Background

The paper finds that Gaia flaring stars are preferentially located above the main sequence, whereas the broader Gaia rotational-modulation parent sample is distributed on both sides of the main sequence. This distribution may indicate that the detected flaring stars trace the more magnetically active component of the parent population.

Although the authors discuss possible connections with fast rotation and Hα activity, they do not establish why flaring stars occupy this elevated position in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. The physical mechanism responsible for the displacement therefore remains unresolved.

References

The distribution observed for our flaring stars may therefore indicate that they trace the more magnetically active component of the {\tt gdr3_rotmod} population, although the physical origin of their displacement above the main sequence is still not fully understood.
